GPS/GIS Technician

The NYS Office of Parks, Recreation, and Historic Preservation (OPRHP) is seeking qualified candidates to fill one GPS/GIS Technician position (Utility Data Training and Outreach Coordinator).  The Utility Data Coordinator will manage all aspects of fixed assets and utility data collection, including coordinating and conducting data collection, training technical staff and serving as a technical resource for regional staff.  The position is temporary/seasonal and located in Albany, NY at 625 Broadway in the GIS Bureau.  Extensive field work and travel all over the state will be required.

Responsibilities:

Under supervision of GIS Bureau manager, primary duties include managing utility data collection, training and outreach.  This includes database development and maintenance, GPS data collection and processing resulting GIS data into state park database, cartographic production, and GIS analysis.  GPS data collection duties include inventorying fixed assets (infrastructure) and utilities within a state park facility.  Once inventory is complete, an interactive map of inventory will be produced in ArcGIS Online to share data with State Park staff.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Potential candidates will have a BS or BA in natural resources, planning, forestry, environmental science, geography or GIS or closely related discipline.
  • 1 – 3 years of applied experience using Esri’s ArcGIS 10.x suite of software or an equivalent combination of education and experience

Preferred Skills and Experience:

  • Familiarity with Trimble GPS units (such as the GeoXT) and Pathfinder Office.
  • Familiarity with ESRI tools and skills such as Spatial Analyst, cartographic representations, python scripting, model builder
  • Familiarity with AutoCAD or other CAD software
  • Experience with utility data collection
  • Experience training staff in GIS and GPS
  • Experience in ESRI’s ArcGIS Online
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, keen orientation to detail, an eye for professional presentation, and recognized organizational abilities.
  • GIS Certificate
  • GIS Internship experience (unpaid or for college credit is acceptable)

 

Salary: $20.01/ hour, 37.5 hours per week
