“Here We Go Again”

This presentation describes yet another disaster cleanup where GIS took center stage.

This presentation will discuss how using GIS/GPS Technology allowed the Town of Huntington to manage the clean-up and data management for Superstorm Sandy. The Town expects to have successful submissions to FEMA that will recover reimbursable expenses exceeding $30 million. In the process of data collection over 250GB of data was collected. This includes digital photographs and scanned paperwork etc. Innovative ideas were used and will be explained.

Post event I was talking to George Davis and he introduced me to the folks at Latitude Geographics. They figured out how to create a configurable<ins cite="mailto:Duncan%20Selwood" datetime="2013-04-02T08:48"> </ins>software platform, Geocortex, that manages ArcGIS workflow and creates multiplatform applications.

Presented by: Michael Naughton, Supervisor – Town of Huntington Highway Department

11:30 – 12:30

Geocortex Essentials Supporting Disaster Response and Recovery

The Highway Department at Town of Huntington, like many other east coast agencies, faced considerable challenges in responding to and recovering from Hurricane Sandy.

Based on Michael’s experience, this informative session will highlight the important role of GIS in supporting disaster response and recovery for all involved, whether they are directing the disaster response or documenting the recovery effort to support FEMA reimbursement.

This informative presentation will describe a more efficient way of quickly deploying cross-platform web mapping applications, and will provide a look at a GIS web-mapping implementation highlighting data and learning’s from Michael’s Sandy response and recovery efforts. This application provides desktop and mobile web mapping and workflows across technology platforms, including desktop computer, tablet and mobile phones, regardless of their operating systems.

A QR code is available here for you to preview the Sandy Geocortex response application and prepare your questions for an interactive session.

Downstate GIS Leaders,

Hello and Happy New Year. Some of you may not know that I was recently elected President of the NYS GIS Association. This email is to simply say hi and to encourage you to consider becoming more active in your State’s organization. I would also very much like it if you could encourage your GIS colleagues in your county, city and regional organizations to also become State Association members. You can read about my approach on the NYS GIS Website at:

http://www.nysgis.net/about/pres_message/

I’d also like to mention some new and ongoing activities that might be of interest to you:

1) Dale Morris of Erie and Niagara County is Chair of the Regional Committee. With the support of Julie Tolar, Association President elect, Dale is pushing to better identify GIS organizations of all kinds across the state with the intention of more closely working with and supporting them.

2) Professional Development: Rich Quodomine, PD Chair, is organizing technical training sessions and a series of information exchanges, all free to members. Rich is looking to partner with local GIS groups. For example, working with Steve Pollackov, we will be making the January 18 th NYC ArcUsers meeting and Census presentation by Steve Romalewski, available to State Association members via webinar.

3) Conferences: The Association recently held a spectacular GeoSpatial Summit in Skaneateles, N.Y. which featured Dr. Roger Tomlinson, the “Father of GIS” helping us celebrate the 50 th anniversary of our profession. http://www.nysgis.net/activities/geospatial-summit/ Past President Bruce Oswald, Verne LeClair, and Conference Committee, are now working on our next conference scheduled for Fall, 2013, to be held in the Albany area. It promises to be the best one yet. We will be looking to make it as easy as possible for Downstate GIS’ers to attend.

4) Website: Our web presence continues to grow and Communications Chair Carol Zollweg and her team are doing a great job making the site more feature rich and interactive. You should visit regularly. http://www.nysgis.net/ In time I’m hoping you will become regular website contributors.

5) Our Education Chairs Ann Deakin and Amy Work are developing an inventory of all GIS academics in the State. They are also developing a program to make ESRI software available at no cost to K-12 teachers.

I am defining the Downstate Area as comprised of Putnam, Westchester, Rockland, Nassau, and Suffolk Counties and New York City. I have pledged to work towards making sure this, the most populous part of NYS, is fully engaged in the Association. I encourage you to distribute this email through your networks and to urge the people you know to become Association members. All it takes is a quick visit to the website and a brief transaction with PayPal to pay the $10 dues. A ROI analysis, developed by Mike Zoltek, Marketing Chair, shows that members are likely to realize benefits more than 40x the cost of their dues. -http://www.nysgis.net/member-area/value-of-membership/

Please let me know if I have missed any key Downstate GIS leaders or organizations. Also tell me whether someone else in your County is more appropriate to contact than yourself. (I am a little unsure of the GIS leadership structure in Suffolk County.) And please send me any thoughts you have about how the NYS GIS Association can be a better friend, ally, and collaborator. As Superstorm Sandy taught us: GIS works best when we are networked together and supporting each other. I’m hoping you agree that being part of the State GIS Association can help make that possible.

My best regards, Alan

President, NYS GIS Association

During the early part of our clean-up efforts from Hurricane Sandy we realized the enormity of the event with regard to the amount of storm debris. The Town of Huntington Highway Department had removed 70,000 cubic yards of vegetative debris during Tropical Storm Irene in 2011. We are now faced with up to 4 times that with Hurricane Sandy.

We needed an easy way to get information to our residents and we needed this information to be publicly available. We had an url registered from years ago so we put it to use.

We set up http://tohhighway.com with storm debris information and most importantly a map showing where we have cleaned up already.

We advertised the site by email and local press.

The feature class is edited every other day in ArcGIS 10.1 and then directly uploaded to ArcGIS Online. We print paper maps for each foreman and have them highlight what they have done the previous two days (paper maps don’t need to be recharged and they do not break when dropped and no training is required to use them). We get these paper maps back from the field and update the map.

ESRI has donated the services as they do whenever there is a disaster. ESRI also provided technical support that was needed to get everything up and running smoothly.

Trimble Positions is the smart way to ensure your mobile GIS is only populated with the best quality data. Whether you are working with Esri ArcGIS for Windows Mobile, or a custom application based on the same Esri mobile technology, Trimble® Positions™ software suite provides a complete streamlined workflow to manage your GNSS data collection for optimal speed and integrity.

Together with ArcGIS for Windows Mobile extend your GIS beyond the office to deploy intuitive and productive mobile GIS data collection for accurate and up-to-date GIS data across your organization.

Trusted data quality

Because business decisions are only as good as the data available, Trimble ensures that GNSS data collected in the field is complete with the three key dimensions of field data—geometries, attributes, and metadata—to give you the confidence your work is on the mark. These complementary data sets are maintained for you throughout your entire workflow, so you can focus on getting more work done.

Integrated synchronization between field and office enables streamlined connections that are quick and efficient.

Define accuracy requirements to ensure certainty of the location of all assets.

Use accuracy based logging for the greatest confidence in your data before leaving the field.

Correct and verify so only qualified data is updated to the GIS. At a single button press, each update adds value making the geodatabase more reliable and useful.

All positions are accompanied by Trimble GNSS metadata to track the pedigree of the data.

Complete your work with total confidence

Confidence is also measured by the consistency and efficiency of your team’s output each day. That’s why Trimble makes it easy for you to manage your complete field data collection operation.

Reduce complexity in the field by configuring your data collectors for consistent results across your whole team.

Simple workflows and feedback guide field workers through even the most complex data collection tasks. You don’t need GNSS or GIS experts to get predictably superior results.

Manage the corrections you use—both real time and postprocessed:

Control and pre-configure for better data consistency with correction source management that is simple and easy to access.

Use postprocessing profiles to efficiently ensure data is of the highest quality every time.

Work wirelessly and synchronize to get data directly and quickly to the GIS.

Full utilization of the Trimble data collection portfolio. Leverage Trimble Floodlight™ satellite shadow reduction technology for more GNSS positions and increased accuracy in tough GNSS environments. A full range of rugged devices is available to meet the needs of almost any application.

Trimble Positions software suite provides you with a streamlined choice for integrating high-performance field data collection into the Esri ArcGIS environment, so you can work smart and with the confidence you need today and tomorrow.

GIS Cloud just released a free extension for Esri ArcMap which enables you to easily push your maps from desktop to GIS Cloud.
This tool will publish maps together with their data and symbology making the end result look the same as in your desktop software.

The extension has been made highly compatible and should work with any ArcMap 9.x and 10.x.

This is what they have so far:
- maps and layers can be created and afterwards updated
- you can choose which layers to export
- your upload is secure through an SSL connection
- all your vector data can be uploaded, regardless of the datasource
- unique value categories and graduated color symbology supported
- labels – these end up with a generic look only in GIS Cloud for now
- point layer symbology support almost at 100%
- simple line symbols – only solid lines
- simple fill symbols – only single color fills

Check here for the blog post about this release: http://www.giscloud.com/blog/release-of-gis-cloud-publisher-extension-for-arcmap/

On May 11th we held our annual conference at Brookhaven National Lab. We had four very informative sessions. Jim Daly from Suffolk County IT explained how their Suffolk iMap web mapping application has matured. He expressed that in the future they may move into a Java/HTML 5 setup. This seemed to be a widely accepted choice as the use of Java and HTML 5 allows for cross platform development and seems to be future proof.

Mark Yedlin, Director of Simulation Modeling Services for Greenman-Pedersen, Inc. gave a presentation on Traffic Modeling in lower Manhattan. This presentation was very interesting because of the vast amounts of data that was captured and how it was then massaged into a usable format. The main focus was on getting New York City busses through the financial district in a more expedient manner. The model included bike traffic, pedestrian traffic, car and truck traffic, traffic signalling etc.

Bill Timmins from GIS Services spoke about the digital pen and other devices. The Capturex Digital Pen looked interesting. It uses a dot matrix that is printed on the paper to figure out where it is. This tool has many useful applications that he showed us in his presentation. Bill explained how he has extensive experience dealing with clients in municipal environments.

Michael Naughton from the Town of Huntington Highway Department spoke about how his department used GIS/GPS technology to manage resources during Tropical Storm Irene.

The event kicked of at 9:45am and ended at around 3pm. There were over 50 people in attendance and they warmly welcomed each speaker. There were vendors from various companies in the hall showing GIS/GPS tools and software.
